What a group does here
At Botassart you look down on the Tombeau du Géant, a wooded hill that the Semois wraps right around. That shape decides how you walk and paddle here. A four-hour route sometimes gets you only two kilometers further as the crow flies. From Botassart it's a twenty-minute walk to that viewpoint. On the slopes you'll still see the wooden drying barns from the days when tobacco was grown here.
The villages in the valley are small and sit high above the water, so you keep descending and climbing again. A group with mixed fitness needs a plan for that. The ferry at Frahan saves you half an hour of climbing and runs from April to October, but only when the ferryman is there. Call the house the evening before and you'll know for sure. On the water, you can canoe from Bouillon to Poupehan in three hours, and the rental companies bring the group back. In the castle of Bouillon you walk through the passages in the rock with a torch. In the evening you drive to Orval Abbey and have a beer in the inn across the road, brewed right there.

Season
October versus August
In October the water is warmer than the air, and the mist hangs over the river until around eleven. From the rocks you look out over a valley full of clouds with only the hilltops sticking out above. In August you won't get that view, and the water is so low that canoeing stops halfway.

Ingrid on this destination
Ingrid drives through this valley every fall. Ask her which house lets you see the mist without a half-hour climb first.
How long is the drive to the Ardennes?
That depends a lot on where you're leaving from and where in the Ardennes your accommodation is located.
From the center of the Netherlands, you can often be in the Ardennes in about three to four hours. From the south of the Netherlands and large parts of Belgium, the travel time is often considerably shorter.
That makes the Ardennes ideal for a weekend away: you really get away, without spending a whole day traveling.
Can we come by tour bus?
At some accommodations, a tour bus can get right up to or close to the house. Other houses are on a narrower or steeper road, for example.
Coming by tour bus? Let us know in advance. Then we can check whether the accommodation is easy to reach for a bus.
What is there to do in the Ardennes?
A lot. And that's exactly why we're so excited about this region.
Think hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, visiting caves, discovering castles, exploring charming towns, or simply enjoying time together around the house.
The options vary by region and season.
