What a group does here

Drive from Bouillon to the Oesling in September and you'll watch the landscape change color along the way. Autumn starts earlier on the plateau, and spring frost lingers longer. The homes are built for it, with thick walls and stoves that aren't just for show. By the end of September, the forests here have already turned completely, while the rest of the Ardennes is still green.

For a group, that altitude means two things. You catch the colors if you come at the end of September, and you pack warmer clothes than the map would suggest. In Vianden, the chairlift takes anyone who doesn't feel like climbing up to the castle, and you can walk back down in twenty minutes. In summer, you swim in the Sûre reservoir, where motorboats aren't allowed. For an afternoon in Luxembourg City, you take the bus, because public transport is free throughout Luxembourg. The drive is the longest of our ten destinations, so for a weekend of two nights, another destination makes more sense.

Season

September versus May

At the end of September, this is the only destination where the forests have already turned completely while the rest of the Ardennes is still green. In May, it flips, and the Oesling actually runs behind, with buds that only open halfway through the month. Groups who come for the colors book the last week of September here.

  • Vianden Castle, ride the chairlift up and walk back down
  • Hiking trail through the Oesling, 14 kilometers across the plateau
  • Sûre reservoir, swimming from a private little beach
  • Luxembourg City, forty minutes away by car with the group

Where to go in Luxembourg

The Oesling is the Luxembourg part of the Ardennes. It sits higher and is quieter, with a castle in almost every valley.

Ingrid on this destination

Ingrid always packs an extra sweater here in October. Ask her which homes have a stove that heats the whole living room.

How long is the drive to the Ardennes?

That depends a lot on where you're leaving from and where in the Ardennes your accommodation is located.

From the center of the Netherlands, you can often be in the Ardennes in about three to four hours. From the south of the Netherlands and large parts of Belgium, the travel time is often considerably shorter.

That makes the Ardennes ideal for a weekend away: you really get away, without spending a whole day traveling.

Can we come by tour bus?

At some accommodations, a tour bus can get right up to or close to the house. Other houses are on a narrower or steeper road, for example.

Coming by tour bus? Let us know in advance. Then we can check whether the accommodation is easy to reach for a bus.

What is there to do in the Ardennes?

A lot. And that's exactly why we're so excited about this region.

Think hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, visiting caves, discovering castles, exploring charming towns, or simply enjoying time together around the house.

The options vary by region and season.
