What a group does here
The High Fens aren't a forest but an open plateau. You walk on wooden boardwalks because the ground beneath is peat, and it takes years for a footstep to disappear. On a clear day you can see for miles, and half an hour later a fog can roll in where you can just barely make out the next marker post. The highest point in Belgium is right here, at 694 meters, and nothing stops the wind.
For a group, that's what this destination is all about. You never walk here without agreeing on who stays at the back. The boardwalks are wide enough for two people side by side, so a group of twenty stretches out over a hundred meters. At the Botrange visitor center, groups of ten or more can get a guided tour, and it's worth it, because a guide sees things in the bog that you won't. In spring, parts of the Fagne Wallonne are closed off for nesting birds, so check the closures before you leave. Always bring rain gear, because the weather on the bog turns quickly. In winter you can cross-country ski here when there's enough snow, and in summer you walk through purple heather.

Season
Winter versus summer
In winter there's more snow here than anywhere else in Belgium, and when there's enough, cross-country ski trails are laid out. In summer the bog turns purple with heather and the plateau is at its quietest. What both seasons share is the wind, because nothing stops it.

How long is the drive to the Ardennes?
That depends a lot on where you're leaving from and where in the Ardennes your accommodation is located.
From the center of the Netherlands, you can often be in the Ardennes in about three to four hours. From the south of the Netherlands and large parts of Belgium, the travel time is often considerably shorter.
That makes the Ardennes ideal for a weekend away: you really get away, without spending a whole day traveling.
Can we come by tour bus?
At some accommodations, a tour bus can get right up to or close to the house. Other houses are on a narrower or steeper road, for example.
Coming by tour bus? Let us know in advance. Then we can check whether the accommodation is easy to reach for a bus.
What is there to do in the Ardennes?
A lot. And that's exactly why we're so excited about this region.
Think hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, visiting caves, discovering castles, exploring charming towns, or simply enjoying time together around the house.
The options vary by region and season.
